Durban – serves Durban and northern KZN, east coast and Indian Ocean islands.
After completing his B.Sc.Q.S. at Durban in 1991, Jean worked in a PQS firm carrying out mainly government work; schools, hospitals, roads, and other public buildings in terms of capital projects and maintenance programmes. Jean then went to England for seven years where he worked in several QS firms as well as three years with Thames Water Utilities, one of the biggest Water and Sewer Utilities worldwide. Jean was involved in complex engineering and piping projects and gained valuable experience in this field. During this period Jean was able to incorporate the British Chartered Surveyors methodologies and experience into his portfolio.
Eager to return to South Africa Jean joined a PQS practice and extended his experience into all avenues of building. In 1999 Jean started consulting to Engen Refinery to manage their QS team and became an expert in the field of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and piping (MEIP) process engineering projects. Jean studied further to become a member of the Association of Cost Engineers and became Senior Cost Control Manager of the refinery. This has involved Capital projects, Major Shutdowns and Turnarounds, acting as Turnaround Controls Manager, as well as ongoing maintenance and contract services. Jean has also been involved in paper and pulp and mining projects.
Jean established Hencon Consultants as a registered QS practice as the sole member. Hencon grew rapidly and staff increased to six people over the first two years. Hencon has been involved in a diverse range of building projects from luxury residential developments, to large-scale retail centres, industrial warehouses and factories, and public work including education and health. Hencon have also been involved with major MEIP projects through Jean’s previous experience and are well recognised in South Africa for their engineering services.
In 2012 Hencon joined VOB Consulting, a business development company specialising in property development and social facilitation. HenconVOB JV are specialist Housing Implementation Agents, project managers and property developers, focussed on unlocking and implementing potential housing projects across South Africa.
